Our History

The Photography Society of Hongkongers in Australia (PSHKA) was founded on 27 August 2022 by Jacky Lee in Canberra, Australia, beginning with small, informal gatherings of photography enthusiasts. These early meetings gradually grew into a supportive community where photographers could connect, share ideas, and inspire one another.

Since then, we’ve steadily expanded our activities, offering regular coffee meet-ups, engaging online discussions, photo walks, and image evaluations. Each event is thoughtfully designed to help members develop their skills, build friendships, and appreciate the unique cultures and landscapes of Australia and Hong Kong. Developed under Jacky Lee Visionary Creations, we aim to create a welcoming space where photographers of all levels can learn, grow, and find joy in the art of photography.

Meet the Founder

Jacky LeeASICI FRPS PFIAP APS/Pb JAPJA is an award-winning visual artist, photographer and founder of the Photography Society of Hongkongers in Australia (PSHKA). Born and raised in the fast-paced city of Hong Kong and now based in Canberra, Jacky first discovered photography in childhood through a camera given to him by his parents. What began as a personal interest gradually became a way to slow down, embrace the present moment and find a sense of emotional freedom amid the pressures of everyday life.

Over more than two decades, Jacky has photographed both natural and built environments, always searching for something extraordinary within the everyday. His practice spans landscape, nightscape, architectural, black-and-white, panoramic, aerial and abstract photography, often exploring the relationships between people, place, memory and culture. His work has received international recognition, including an award from National Geographic, and has been exhibited in numerous countries across five continents. As an accredited drone pilot in Australia, he also creates aerial images that reveal unfamiliar perspectives on the landscapes and cities around us.

Jacky contributes actively to the photographic community in Australia and internationally. He is a Management Committee Member of the Australian Photographic Society (APS), a Board Director of the International Association of Panoramic Photographers (IAPP), Honorary Secretary of the Royal Photographic Society Australian Chapter, and a Management Committee Member of the Australian Photographic Judges Association (APJA). He also serves as a mentor and qualified photographic judge with the Photographic Society of America (PSA), reflecting his commitment to photographic education, thoughtful evaluation and the development of other photographers.

At PSHKA, Jacky serves as convenor, organising photo walks, learning activities and opportunities for members to share and discuss their work. He believes that photography is not only about making beautiful images, but also about telling stories, connecting people across cultures and learning to appreciate the world more deeply. By encouraging members to slow down, live in the moment and recognise the beauty around them, Jacky hopes to help others experience the same sense of joy, connection and emotional wellbeing that photography has brought to his own life.
